1. Clothes Take Multiple Cycles to Dry
This is the most common sign. When your vent is clogged, hot moist air can't escape. Your dryer works harder but dries less. If clothes that used to dry in one cycle now take two or three, your vent is almost certainly restricted.
2. The Dryer Is Extremely Hot to the Touch
A properly vented dryer gets warm during operation. If the top of your dryer is too hot to touch comfortably, that's excess heat trapped by a blocked vent. This overheating damages your dryer's internal components and is a fire risk.
3. You Smell Burning During a Cycle
A burning smell while your dryer runs is serious. Lint is highly combustible, and when trapped lint gets hot enough, it can smolder. If you smell burning, stop the dryer immediately, unplug it, and call a professional.
4. The Outside Vent Flap Doesn't Open
Go outside while your dryer is running and check the vent exit. The flap should open with a steady stream of warm air flowing out. If the flap barely moves or stays closed, airflow is severely restricted. This is the most definitive sign of a blockage.
5. Visible Lint Around the Connection
Pull your dryer away from the wall and check the vent connection. If you see lint accumulating around the joint, inside the vent opening, or on the floor behind the dryer, lint is escaping the ductwork — meaning it's packed tight inside.
6. The Laundry Room Feels Humid
Your dryer exhausts moisture outside. When the vent is clogged, that moisture has nowhere to go. It pushes back into the laundry room, causing humidity, condensation on windows, and potentially mold growth.
7. It's Been Over a Year Since Last Cleaning
Even without obvious symptoms, if it's been more than 12 months since your dryer vent was professionally cleaned, it's overdue. FEMA recommends annual cleaning. If you have pets, do laundry frequently, or have a long vent run, every 6 months is better.
Don't gamble with fire safety. Professional dryer vent cleaning takes 30–60 minutes and costs a fraction of what a dryer fire would.
